Almost every station in Philadelphia carried a singing commercial by a dentist:
Dr . Algase.
He must have been a pioneer since in those days it was not ethical
for doctors and dentists, etc to advertise. After much searching I found on the sheet music the cover (right)
.That song, Show a Sunny Smile, was composed by Dr. Algase himself and legend has it that he sang it as well! He also founded a club and even produced a radio wedding! Attached is the cover of the music.
If by some miracle there as a recording of that singing commercial I would be surprised and delighted. The singer (Dr. Algae?) was a tenor backed by a 1920s or 1930s type orchestra. I know that they should be very rare especially those that were local. If you happen to have such a recordings, please reply below!
The song started: "Oh your smile will make folks like you, it's the only thing that will......" (I remember the tune but forget the rest, except that it ended with "a sunny smile". My father was a dentist in Philadelphia at the time and the dental community considered Dr Algase as unethical because it was not ethical to advertise the dental profession, and the Philadelphia Dental Society rebuked Dr Algase.
ReplyDeletealways show a smile that's sunny, while away your little cares. let the world know that you're happy.....
ReplyDeleteI wonder if there still exists somewhere a recording of Dr. Algaze singing this song? It is engraved in my memory forever from when I was a kid, 6 or 7 years old, and was allowed to use the the radio:
ReplyDeleteOh, be sure your smile is sunny
smile away each little care
let the world know that you're hap-py
that your skies are blue and fair.
Only smile will make folks like you
they're the only thing in style
keep this slogan right before you:
It's Your Sunny Smile!
