- 1. CBS West Coast – aired weekly throughout the year in the 7 western states where the Signal Oil Company had a presence. These shows are our primary driver during this run.
- 2. CBS Central – aired weekly from 46-02-03 through the end of the calendar year at 9:30 CDT (8:30 CST) on Sundays on WBBM in Chicago. These shows were all produced at WBBM studios using local repertory players and they were sponsored by Meister Brau Beer. I do not yet know if any other stations in the mid-west carried the programs in 1946.
- 3. CBS NET – sustained by CBS, the Whistler ran from 46-07-03 through 46-09-25, as a summer replacement for the Jack Carson show, everywhere else on the network except stations in the Signal sponsorship area and WBBM. A separate log is available for this run.
CHICAGO BROADCASTS
Two programs that have Meister Brau sponsorship and
live audiences. Furthermore, announcements are made to the effect that they are
produced in the studios of WBBM.
The first program is dated 46-09-08 with the title ‘A Brief
Pause For Murder’. An initial log for The Whistler on WBBM in
1946 from information gleaned from the CDT and WSJ. Information for every week
is not available, however this date and title matches my log so I believe it is
correct.
The second program is dated 46-12-02 and is titled ‘Blind
Impulse’. While the program is obviously from the 1946 Chicago run, that date
is definitely incorrect.
Here’s what I know so far about this episode:
The West Coast,
Signal Oil sponsored, version of ‘Blind Impulse’ aired on 46-12-02, which was a
Monday - the regular broadcast day for the West Coast at that time. According
to the script book, it featured Virginia Gregg and Frank Graham. The
incorrectly dated Chicago program stars Patricia Dunlap and Ed Prentice.
Unfortunately I have not yet found a reference to the
program title in my research. I do know that the show for 46-12-01 was
advertized as ‘Kind Thought’ and the program for 46-12-08 was shown as ‘Two
Year Plan’. Both of these and the show prior aired the previous Monday on the West
Coast. Titles for 46-12-15, 22 or 29 are unavailable so this episode could have
aired on any of those dates.
CBS NET BROADCASTS
We also have two of the thirteen sustained Jack Carson Show
Summer replacement series. The first one is dated 46-07-24 and is titled ‘My
Love Comes Home’. The second is dated 46-08-21 and is titled ‘The Broken
Chain’. Both of these shows appear to be correctly dated.
